The army veteran known as Cadillac Man began living on the streets of New York in 1994 and has been there ever since. His memoir is vulgar, sexually explicit (occasionally), and written in a style that ranges from polished to awkward. Cadillac Man describes his life on the streets in precise detail: how to survive, how to eat, how to keep clean and warm. I am autistic and I also have 13 other disabilities. Reading and writing has always come hard to me but I do enjoy reading immensely. I'm an old autistic werewolf so I have been reading books for over 50 years now. Growing up disabled and autistic I was a nerd \ geek so I spent most of my childhood in libraries. Readong became my my most treasured passion in a life where sports and other such childhood pursuits were too often out of my reach. So for me reading was my refuge from the mean streets. I share this so when you hear me say this is the best book I've ever read you know my background as a reader and lover of great books.
I don't throw around the term "MUST READ" lightly. However Land of the Lost Souls: My Life on the Streets has moved me so profoundly as to leave me without words enugh to convey my awe. I spent my youth helping the homeless when I was so totally idealistic. I know the things Cadillac Mn speaks of in his book are true to what it is to live on inner city streets. I helped homeless people and even I never could write about the experience with the insight and passion Cadillac Man has managed.
This book is a must read because; better than any other book I've read on homelessness Land of the Lost Souls: My Life on the Streets is an uncompromised look into life as it is experienced by a homeless man. I've rarely if ever been afraid of homeless peope but I've always been careful in their midst till I know them but that is true with anyone. Land of the Lost Souls: My Life on the Streets brought me to tears more than a few times. Penny wormed her way into my heart. Also the gentleman who talked constantly on the street corner so much like me enjoyed the sound of his own voice. When he was killed by the moving van my heart sunk because; he is the one character in the book that is most like me.
What makes Land of the Lost Souls: My Life on the Streets an awesome read is the fact that every word was tugged from a caring heart of a wounded man who is no stranger to struggle. I am reasonably certain that in life I will never read any book powerful as this other than the Holy Bible. Thank you Cadillac Man for the blessing you have been in my life. You shall remain in my prayers sir.

OK Book

I know this was written as being a true story but I don't believe that it is. I have some experience on the street and this seems a bit exagerated to me. His stories and experiences are too pat. It is an interesting enough read but about the middle it just wears thin. I had trouble wanting to finish it.

Hard to believe

I was very excited to read this book after seeing the author interviewed on NY1. I was extremely disappointed. I just had a hard time believing it. Here is a guy living on the streets, who refuses money. When he gets money he throws it in a church poor box, all the other homeless people look to him like a savior, he is a protector of prostitutes and their pimp is his great friend. He was like the super hero of the homeless. I just couldn't believe what I was reading.
In one scene he is sitting with some prostitutes, who consider him their guardian, and Chocolate Milk the pimp comes along, grabs Cadillac Man, rips his wallet from his pants pocket(ripping his pants pocket off)and takes his last three dollars and replaces it with a wad of money...for looking after his girls. Amazing.
This same pimp is sitting in a dinner with some of his girls and the Cadillac Man. They are having a grand old time laughing and joking, when in comes a mother with her children and is obviously down and out. Chocolate Milk proceeds to whisper something to the wait-staff who then starts bringing out a smorgasbord of food to the mother's table. Then he slams a wad of money on the table and walks out with his entourage in tears. This is better than a fairy tale.
I was expecting a chilling tale of life on the streets and how different and hard life could be for certain individuals but instead got a tale of the gallant Cadillac Man parading around the city rescuing his fellow homeless, paying his own way, protecting prostitutes and befriending the pimp from heaven.
