Another great read from T.R. Pearson

More than comedic immersion, Off for the Sweet Hereafter shows how ordinary humans trounce on common sense while reflecting our own foibles. One has to admire the effort a writer makes to create a whole community of madcap characters whose lives are the triumph of hope over experience.
This book and it's companion A Short History of a Small Place (read this first) do make a demand on the reader - one has to join in. This is not TV, not the movies or the theater. To truly enjoy these books one has to forget what was taught in the third grade and read with your lips moving. Lip reading lends to the marvelous cadence Pearson creates as the characters interact with this plant - and a few times with maybe another planet.
You will not be disappointed if you want your heartbeat to slow down and your imagination to fire up.

Yeah there is merit here, but too hard to trudge through...

I have read maybe 20% of this (it was free). I am from the small town South ( NC ), so I get what the author is doing and recognize these people, attitudes, lifestyle, interactions, etc. However, even though you get some humorous glimpses, it is really draining to read, the sentences are long, and because of the multiple characters you can forget who is who and how they are related to the others. If it were a somewhat faster pace, I could handle it better, but as it is, I don't think I can finish it, and that is RARE with me. As an audio book it might be better tolerated; sort of like listening to news from Lake Woebegon on A Prairie Home Companion, but I still think it would be tedious.
